History
The University of Delhi was established in 1922 through the Delhi University Act (Act No. VIII of 1922) passed by the Central Legislative Assembly. At its inception, the university had only three constituent colleges—St. Stephen's College (founded 1881), Hindu College (founded 1899), and Ramjas College (founded 1917)—with a combined enrollment of 750 students. Sir Hari Singh Gour served as the university's founding Vice-Chancellor.
In 1933, the administrative offices and core academic departments shifted to the Viceregal Lodge estate in North Delhi, which became the university's permanent North Campus. To accommodate rapid expansion and the growing student population in South Delhi, the university established its South Campus in 1973, initially operating from Dhaula Kuan before shifting to its current permanent location at Benito Juarez Marg in 1983.
